Stage 33: Mürren (1638m) to Griesalp (1408m)

Back to passes: today you cross the Sefinenfurgge (Furgge means "fork", or "pass"), at 2612m the highest point on the hike so far. You are now just over a third of the way through the H2H and, unless the weather has been much worse than usual, it should be around the beginning of August.
How will you feel? Like mountain goats, like stoic mules, or like short-legged dogs at the end of a long walk? Will you still wake up each morning excited to be on the H2H? Will you still be talking to your fellow hikers... and if so, after forty days, what will you still find to talk about?
From a pre-hike perspective, it is difficult to imagine what your state of mind will be as you leave Mürren this morning. If you are like me, you have never done anything like this before. Perhaps all you can really say beforehand is that somehow or other by this time the H2H will have changed you. The Alps may be well-mapped, but the H2H will nevertheless take you into the unknown....
Route
Today's hike follows the same trails as the Via Alpina. From Mürren take the path just above the cable car station southwest through Gimmela (1794m) to the Rotstockhütte (2039m). A few hundred meters further the trail forks and you take the left-hand path up to the Sefinenfurgge (2612m). From there a steep but otherwise unproblematic trail descends into Griesalp.
Alternatives: none. If the weather is bad, take a rest day. Although there are no really exposed places, you won't enjoy it in the rain.
Map: ST-264T Jungfrau.

Room and Board Options
Lunch: plan on a picnic lunch (the Rotstockhütte is reached too early).
Dinner and overnight: there are only a couple of places to stay and eat at in Griesalp (for a list, see here). One other possibility not mentioned on the website is the Hotel Waldrand at Pochtenalp, about 15 minutes further down the valley (+41-(0)33676-1208, 9 doubles, 9 singles).
Getting There and Back
Mürren: there is a railway station in Lauterbrunnen, from which you can take one of the frequent cog-railway trains up to Mürren (for schedule information for both regular and cog-railway trains, see the SBB).
Griesalp: a very infrequent bus goes from Griesalp to Reichenbach im Kandertal, where there is a railway station (for schedule information for both buses and trains, see the SBB).
ViaMichelin Road Map and Driving Directions: centered on Mürren, centered on Griesalp.
